Philosophy, or the love of knowledge, has been an integral part of a comprehensive education for over 2000 years. From the stoa of Ancient Athens to the modern classroom, encountering the questions of philosophy from a young age have always been important to unlocking the skills of critical thinking and to stimulate curious minds.

What is interesting is that youth often find themselves considering philosophical questions unprompted, such as thinking about what the ethical thing to do is or how their subjective experience relates to the world around them. Philosophy Camp equips students not only with the means to think deeply about these problems but begin to answer them and live an examined life.

Philosophy is often misrepresented as an abstract, old fashioned and not very important activity. This, however, could not be further from the truth. Philosophy plays a critical role in all parts of human inquiry and life, from the sciences to politics to sport. Despite how impactful philosophical thinking is on our world, it is severely under taught.

To demonstrate the impact that philosophical thinking can have on one’s life, consider some of its most famous disciples:

  • Pierre Trudeau (Former Prime Minister of Canada)

  • Bill Clinton (42nd President of the United States of America)

  • Angela Davis (Political Activist and Social Philosophy)

  • Aung San Suu Kyi (Nobel Peace Prize Winner)

  • Martin Luther King, Jr. (Civil Rights Activist)

  • Simone de Beavoir (Feminist Activist, Author of ‘The Second Sex’)

  • George Soros (Investor and Philanthropist)

  • Lana Del Rey (Singer Songwriter)

  • Pope John Paul II (Head of Catholic Church)

Presently, there is almost no exposure to philosophy at the middle school level and most high school students see few opportunities to engage with it. Philosophy Camp’s mission is therefore to help bring philosophical thinking to as many youth as possible, empowering them with the critical thinking, reflection and communication skills necessary for success anywhere.
